IAN HISCOCKS

Founder Ian Hiscocks has over 20 years experience as a design engineer in the aerospace environment.

Apprenticed at the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough, England. Starting his apprenticeship in September 1980, he finished in 1984 as an instrument maker craftsman, then spending an additional three years in the workshops before obtaining promotion into the Drawing Office in March 1988, training as a Engineering Design Draftsman (mechanical). During this period Ian also attended Farnborough College of Technology and obtained HNC’s in Mechanical and Production Engineering.

Initially trained on traditional manual drawing boards before also using Computer Aided Design software to produce Engineering Drawings to enable the production of mechanical components and assemblies in an aerospace Research and Development environment, including supporting documentation for aircraft clearance.

Over the years Ian has worked on R&D design in various areas including:-

Simulators for Fixed and Rotary wing air vehicles as static and 3 DOF motion based units. From complex cockpits to simple desk mounted units. Man Machine Integration, design of helmet fixtures and equipment for various simulator rolls and future development.

In the mid to late nineties the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) changed and became the Defence Research Agency (DRA) then the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA) and then into QinetiQ. In the later part of DRA and into early QinetiQ period Ian was responsible for preparation and producing the procedures covering Design and the workshops for the Department as we applied for and gained ISO 9000 accreditation.

In later years Ian has been involved in the design and integration of R&D equipment into various air vehicles including Helicopters, fixed wing aircraft, unmanned aircraft and airships. Also involved in the design of various optical integration components for helmet mounted displays, Night vision Goggles and miniature mounted cameras.

Although most tasks have been R&D tasks with only a few units of each manufactured, a few have progressed on to full development and production including an equipment racking system for use in various aircraft, a small wearable Scene and Eye Tracking camera system and the injection moulding of a small assembly for use on night vision goggles.

After receiving redundancy in September 2009, Ian set up Raptor Design in May 2010.
